After a bit of last minute gearbox drama, Duncan Stonier reports that the Volvo is ready to head down to Cornwall for the start of LeJog on Saturday. Duncan has competed as a driver on the event no less than six times, this time he’s going to try his hand at navigating Chris Winter around who owns the car. Chris has won a Gold Medal award on the event before as a navigator so Duncan has something to live up to. Dave Clifford has been instrumental in getting the car ready with him installing the gearbox this morning!
Fellow Bath member Bernard Northmore, also a previous Gold medal winner is out as well navigating a Rover 2200 for Roger Cooke.
With luck, both of them should arrive in John ‘O’ Groats early on Tuesday morning.
Update from Dave Smith - Well that was an adventure for the Volvo and crew. The event lived up to its fearsome reputation with no let up as the competitors headed North through some completely bonkers weather. Sadly, not far from Oban on Monday late evening, the exhaust on the car decided to split away completely from the manifold. Knowing that getting it repaired in time was not possible and there was no way it could continue without an exhaust (110db inside the car!), the decision was made to retire. The offending exhaust was split into sections so it could be transported and the car was pointed South for the 430 mile run home, arriving back at 7am on Tuesday morning. A sad end but over 1000 miles completed and the headache is gradually going!
