Taunton Rally - Excellent event, organised by Taunton MC, based just off J26 of the M5 so not too far from home. The event used map 193 and used the lanes between Wellington, Axminster and Chard, which is historically Bagger country. Route was all pre-plot map references (5 pages) and 3 pages of NAM junctions. One page of NAM was for a loop of Smeatharpe. The roads are very tight and fortunately dry, however the potholes are impossible to describe. I’ve seen rough roads on Road Rallies, but I don’t think I’ve seen roads like it and the number of bad roads. The unsurfaced parts of the Fosseway in Wiltshire, could be described as a billard table in comparison. Fortunately Devon/Somerset councils have invested in some “Potholes” road signs which makes it much better. ????
The roads took their toll with 13 retirements from the 30 starters, and it was a relief to get to the finish.
Not having a couple of wrong slots and a bit of mal de nav, might have pulled us into the top ten, but no where near the top crews who seemed to drop an amazing little amount of time.
A great event which challenged both driver and navigator as promised.
